Costs

What affects the cost of security for a technology site?

No two technology sites cost the same to protect, which is why we survey before we quote. These are the things that move the price.

  • Number of doors and secure areas

    Biggest factor

Every door on access control needs a reader, lock and cabling, and server rooms, labs and R&D areas usually need their own permissions. Deciding early which rooms need restricted access keeps the design focused.

  • Credentials and readers

    Varies

Cards and fobs are the most common. Biometric readers can be added for the highest-security rooms, and different credentials can be used for different areas.

  • Camera coverage

    Site specific

The number of cameras, the areas they cover inside and outside, and how long footage is kept all affect the price. High-definition IP cameras suit areas where detail matters.

  • Intruder alarm grade and signalling

    Varies

Buildings that are empty overnight or at weekends usually need an alarm that alerts keyholders. The grade and signalling are matched to the risk and your insurer's requirements.

  • Perimeter and vehicle control

    If required

Larger campuses and data centres may need fence detection, barriers or ANPR at vehicle entrances. Offices in shared buildings usually do not.

  • Integration and maintenance

    Ongoing

Linking systems adds set-up time but saves effort later. Our maintenance contracts include a full check twice a year as standard.

Security for technology sites

Security systems for offices, labs and server rooms

Technology sites mix open, shared spaces with rooms where only a few people should ever go. We design security around that difference: easy movement for staff and visitors through the main building, and tighter control, recording and alerts around server rooms, development labs, prototype workshops and equipment stores.

Access control, CCTV and intruder alarm work is carried out under our SSAIB certification, and the same team can look after your fire alarms.

Access Control Solutions

Seeing and controlling access

Security at a technology site is as much about knowing who went where as keeping people out.

Access control and audit trails

Set who can enter each area and when, and keep a record of who accessed server rooms, labs and R&D departments. See our access control and Paxton access control pages.

CCTV and alarms that work together

CCTV covers entrances, labs, equipment storage and site boundaries, and an intruder alarm activation can be recorded on camera so you can see what caused it.

Hybrid working changes who needs access. When teams come and go, permissions need to be easy to update. How remote and hybrid working is changing access control risk

Maintenance and support for technology sites

A failed reader on a server room door or a camera that has stopped recording is a gap you may not notice until it matters. We maintain the systems we install and take over systems installed by other companies.

What maintenance covers

Readers, locks and door hardware are checked, cameras are cleaned, aligned and tested for recording, alarm detectors and batteries are tested, and communication links are verified. Remote support and diagnostics can resolve many faults without a site visit.

Takeovers, upgrades and growth

As teams grow or move, we add doors, cameras and detectors, update permissions and upgrade older systems, including moving CCTV to a high-definition IP platform. We look at the existing system first, so the quotation reflects what is already there.

Our maintenance contracts include a full check twice a year as standard, backed by a 24-hour manned service line and a 24-hour emergency technician call-out, 365 days a year. More about maintenance

Joined-up security

Integrated security for technology companies

Technology organisations often need several systems working together. Linking access control, CCTV, intruder alarms, perimeter protection and ANPR improves visibility across a site and makes incidents quicker to investigate.

We plan integration at the design stage, so each system is chosen to work with the others rather than added later. Read more about the benefits of integrating CCTV and access control.

Access control

Who goes where

Controls entry to server rooms, labs and R&D areas and records every door event, with cameras linked at key doors.

Access control systems

CCTV

See what happened

High-definition IP cameras cover entrances, workspaces and boundaries, with footage you can review against door and alarm events.

Commercial CCTV

Perimeter and ANPR

Larger sites and campuses

Fence detection, barriers and ANPR control vehicles and warn of intrusions before anyone reaches the building.

Perimeter protection

Secure areas

Protecting the areas that matter most

Most technology sites have a few areas that need more protection than the rest of the building.

We look at each one at the survey and recommend the level of control it needs.

Server rooms and data rooms

Restricted access with an audit trail, CCTV on the door and an intruder alarm zone for out-of-hours protection.

Best for: comms rooms, server rooms and data infrastructure.

Worth knowing: fire detection in these rooms needs planning too, and our fire alarm team can advise.

Development labs and workshops

Access limited to the people working on each project, with CCTV covering entrances and equipment areas.

Best for: R&D departments, prototype workshops and research labs.

Worth knowing: permissions can be changed as projects and teams change.

Offices and reception

Access control and door entry that let staff move freely while visitors are met and signed in, with CCTV at entrances.

Best for: shared workspaces and front of house.

Worth knowing: one card or fob can open the office but not the lab.

Campuses and site boundaries

Perimeter protection, barriers and ANPR for sites with their own grounds, car parks and delivery areas.

Best for: larger technology campuses and data centres.

Worth knowing: offices in shared buildings rarely need this layer.

SSAIB certified for access control, CCTV and intruder alarms

Our access control, CCTV and intruder alarm installation, servicing and maintenance work is carried out under our SSAIB certification. SSAIB is a UKAS-accredited certification body. Fire alarms are handled by our fire team and are not part of the SSAIB certification, and we will tell you at the survey stage which parts of your system it covers.

We also look after intruder alarms, CCTV, access control and fire alarms for cable manufacturer JDR at its Littleport headquarters.

  • Technology offices
  • Research labs
  • R&D facilities
  • Server rooms
  • Campuses

Each site has its own priorities, from a single server room to a campus with its own grounds. We design around how the site is actually used.

“Advance Security has been our security systems installer and maintainer for the last 16 years. Our site has developed massively in that time and the security requirements have grown accordingly.

We have Access Control Systems covering some 130 entrance doors across three offices in the UK and Advance has been instrumental in ensuring they were delivered to meet our demanding deadlines.

Our CCTV system was recently brought up to the latest high definition IP platform, and again Advance Security were there to provide the transition, ensuring the minimum down time.

I would have no hesitation in recommending Advance Security, they have a can-do attitude, and are always on call at a moment’s notice when we need them – any faults being resolved or repaired the same day.”
