Overview
Commercial perimeter protection covering Cambridgeshire and East Anglia
A perimeter protection system is designed to detect, deter and delay unauthorised access at the boundary of a site. BDi Advance designs, installs and maintains perimeter protection for commercial and industrial sites, warehouses and yards across Cambridgeshire and East Anglia, combining detection at the fence line with control of the vehicles and people coming in.
- Local engineers based in Huntingdon, covering Cambridgeshire and East Anglia
- Fence-mounted and outdoor detection that alerts you before anyone reaches the building
- Vehicle control with barriers, bollards and road blockers
- Pedestrian control with turnstiles, kept apart from vehicle routes
- Linked to your CCTV, ANPR cameras and access control
- Planned maintenance for equipment that works outdoors in all weathers

Costs
What affects the cost of perimeter protection?
A perimeter system is priced from the boundary itself: how long it is, how many entrances it has and which layers it needs. These are the main factors.
Length and layout of the boundary
Biggest factor
The longer the fence line and the more entrances there are, the more detection, cabling and equipment the site needs. Uneven ground, trees and buildings on the boundary all affect the design.
Type of detection
Site specific
Fence-mounted sensors, invisible volumetric detection fields and video motion detection each suit different boundaries. Weather, animals and passing traffic all have to be allowed for to keep false alarms down.
Vehicle control
Varies
Automatic barriers, bollards and road blockers differ widely in size and groundwork. Sites at risk of ram-raids or vehicle impact need heavier equipment than a car park entrance.
Pedestrian control
If required
Turnstiles and pedestrian gates give people a separate, controlled route in, which is safer than sharing a vehicle entrance.
Links to CCTV, ANPR and access control
Site specific
Linking detection to cameras lets you see what caused an alert. ANPR and access control decide which vehicles and people the barriers and turnstiles let in.
Maintenance
Ongoing
Barriers, gates, road blockers and turnstiles are outdoor moving equipment, so a maintenance programme keeps them working and helps them last longer.

Perimeter protection
What is perimeter protection?
Rather than relying solely on internal intruder alarms, perimeter protection identifies potential threats at the boundary, before entry is made. Outdoor systems are installed along fences, gates and access points, and can use vibration sensors, motion detection and beams to pick up climbing, cutting or interference.
Physical measures do the other half of the job. Barriers, bollards and road blockers control vehicles, turnstiles control people, and CCTV shows you what is happening. We choose the mix around your site, the risk and how people and vehicles use it.

When the boundary is breached
An alert at the fence line needs a clear response, so we agree with you what each part of the system does when a breach is detected, and test it at handover.
Alerts to your team
A breach can trigger an alarm and start camera recording, so you can see what is happening.
Linked to CCTV and alarms
Perimeter detection can integrate with intruder alarms, CCTV and access control, so an alert starts camera recording and you can see whether it is a real intrusion.
Police response needs a URN. Under NPCC policy, police will only respond to a monitored intruder alarm that has a Unique Reference Number. Ask us whether your site needs one.
Joined-up security
Linked to your CCTV, ANPR and access control
Perimeter protection works best when every layer talks to the others. Cameras verify what the sensors detect, and access control and ANPR decide which people and vehicles the barriers and turnstiles let through.
The CCTV, access control and intruder alarm elements are carried out under our SSAIB certification.
CCTV
See what caused the alert
Cameras along the boundary verify alerts from perimeter detection, so only real intrusions are acted on, and video motion detection can add a detection layer of its own.
ANPR cameras
Vehicles in and out
ANPR reads number plates at vehicle entrances and can open a barrier or gate for authorised vehicles only, with a record of every arrival.
Access control
People and vehicles
Access control can run barriers, turnstiles and gates as well as doors, so one system decides who gets in at the perimeter and the building.
Perimeter layers
Four layers of perimeter protection
Most sites need more than one layer, and the right mix depends on what you need to keep out.
We survey the boundary, the entrances and how people and vehicles use the site, then recommend the layers that fit.
Perimeter detection
Fence-mounted sensors, invisible volumetric detection fields and video motion detection raise an alert when someone climbs, cuts or crosses the boundary.
Best for: yards, compounds and sites with a fence line to protect.
Vehicle control
Automatic barriers control traffic flow, while bollards and road blockers stop unauthorised vehicles and protect frontages from ram-raid attempts.
Best for: car parks, goods-in and sites at risk from vehicle impact.
Pedestrian control
Turnstiles control who walks on to the site, and give people their own route rather than sharing a vehicle entrance.
Best for: staff entrances, reception areas and gaps in a perimeter fence line.
Gates and automation
Automatic gates and barrier automation, linked to access control or ANPR so authorised vehicles get in without stopping.
Worth knowing: outdoor moving equipment needs regular maintenance to stay reliable.
Perimeter protection design and installation
How an installation works
Every perimeter project begins with a free survey of the boundary and its entrances. From there we plan the layers together, so detection, vehicle control and pedestrian control work as one system within your budget.

Risk and survey
The boundary, terrain, entrances and how the site is used, so the design matches the real risk
Design
Detection, vehicle and pedestrian control chosen together, and linked to your CCTV, ANPR and access control
Installation
Installed, set up and tested by our engineers, and your team shown how the system works
Ongoing support
Maintenance contracts include a full check twice a year, with 24-hour emergency call-out
SSAIB certified for CCTV, access control and intruder alarms
The CCTV, access control and intruder alarm elements of a perimeter system are carried out under our SSAIB certification. SSAIB is a UKAS-accredited certification body. Physical equipment such as barriers, bollards, road blockers and gates is outside the SSAIB scheme, and we will tell you at the survey stage which parts of your system it covers.
Perimeter protection across Cambridgeshire and East Anglia
We are a Cambridgeshire business with local engineers, providing responsive maintenance and long-term support for the perimeter systems we install. We also service, maintain and take over systems installed by other companies.
Areas we cover
We install and maintain perimeter protection across Cambridgeshire and East Anglia, including Cambridge, Huntingdon, Peterborough, St Ives, St Neots, Ely, Wisbech, March, Newmarket and Bury St Edmunds.
Our engineers are local to the region, and we also work with national clients across the UK.
Sectors
We protect the perimeters of commercial and industrial sites, warehouses and distribution yards, retail units and construction compounds.

- Warehouses and distribution
- Retail
- Construction compounds
A distribution yard needs vehicles controlled around the clock, while a shopfront needs protection from ram-raids. The layers we recommend follow the risks at your boundary.
“Advance Security has been our security systems installer and maintainer for the last 16 years. Our site has developed massively in that time and the security requirements have grown accordingly. We have Access Control Systems covering some 130 entrance doors across three offices in the UK and Advance has been instrumental in ensuring they were delivered to meet our demanding deadlines. Our CCTV system was recently brought up to the latest high definition IP platform, and again Advance Security were there to provide the transition, ensuring the minimum down time. I would have no hesitation in recommending Advance Security, they have a can-do attitude, and are always on call at a moment’s notice when we need them – any faults being resolved or repaired the same day.”

Frequently asked questions
A perimeter protection system is a security solution installed around the boundary of a property to detect and deter unauthorised access before entry occurs. It can combine perimeter detection, vehicle control such as barriers and bollards, pedestrian control such as turnstiles, and CCTV.
