Priorities

What healthcare premises need from a security system

No two healthcare sites are protected the same way, which is why we survey before we quote. These are the areas we plan around.

  • Restricted clinical and storage areas

    Access control

Operating theatres, medicine storage rooms, laboratories, data rooms and staff-only zones should only open to authorised people. Access control manages who can go where and keeps an audit trail where one is required.

  • Visitors and public areas

    CCTV and entry

Receptions, corridors and waiting areas are busy with patients and visitors. CCTV and a video intercom at the front door help staff see who is arriving and manage visitors safely.

  • Premises out of hours

    Intruder alarms

Surgeries, clinics and dental practices are often empty overnight and at weekends. An intruder alarm protects medicine storage, equipment rooms and entry points when nobody is there.

  • Site boundaries and vehicles

    Larger sites

Hospital sites with large estates or busy vehicle movements can use perimeter protection, barriers, bollards and ANPR to manage ambulance access, staff parking and visitor flow.

  • Patient privacy

    Design

Cameras are specified to align with healthcare privacy expectations while still supporting incident review and day-to-day oversight of the site.

  • Fire safety

    Alongside security

Fire alarms and detection protect staff, patients and buildings, and can be looked after by the same team that maintains your security systems.

Healthcare security systems

Security systems for healthcare premises

Most healthcare sites need more than one system, and they work best when they are designed together. Access control keeps restricted areas restricted, CCTV shows what is happening across the site, and an intruder alarm protects the building when it is closed.

Systems can also be linked. At The Cambridge ADHD & Autism Centre we upgraded the intruder alarm, added remote control and a video intercom at the front door, and integrated the access control so it arms and disarms the alarm.

Access control, CCTV, intruder alarms and perimeter protection

Each system is chosen around how your site is used, from a single surgery door to a multi-building estate.

Access control

Controlled access to clinical areas, medication storage, laboratories, data rooms and staff-only zones, using key cards, fobs or biometric readers, with audit trails where required. More about access control.

CCTV

Coverage of entrances, corridors, public areas, car parks and external grounds, specified with patient privacy in mind and supporting incident review. More about CCTV.

Intruder alarms

Protection for surgeries, clinics and dental practices when they are closed, with alerts to keyholders' phones. More about intruder alarms.

Perimeter and vehicle access

Perimeter detection, barriers, bollards and ANPR for larger healthcare sites, managing ambulance access, staff parking and visitor flow. More about perimeter protection.

Not every site needs every system. A small surgery may only need an intruder alarm and door entry, while a hospital site may need all four. We will tell you which applies.

Maintenance and support for healthcare sites

Healthcare security systems need to work reliably at all times. We maintain the systems we install, and we service, maintain and take over systems installed by other companies.

Planned maintenance

Scheduled servicing of CCTV, access control and intruder alarms, with remote support and diagnostics, so faults are picked up and dealt with before they affect patients and staff.

Takeovers and upgrades

We look at the existing system first, then maintain, extend or upgrade it as your estate changes, whether that is a new building, a new service or a change in how the site is used.

Our maintenance contracts include a full check twice a year as standard, backed by a 24-hour manned service line and a 24-hour emergency technician call-out, 365 days a year. More about maintenance

Fire safety

Fire safety for healthcare premises

Fire safety systems in healthcare premises may include fire alarms, detectors, emergency lighting and ongoing maintenance to protect staff, patients and buildings.

We provide fire alarm installation and maintenance and fire extinguisher services, and fire risk assessments are arranged through our sister company, Pyro Fire, so security and fire safety can be organised through one supplier rather than several.

Types of healthcare premises

Security needs change with the size of the site and how it is used.

These are the healthcare settings we design for, and a system can grow as your premises do.

GP surgeries and dental practices

Out-of-hours protection for medicine storage, equipment and entry points, with controlled access to staff areas.

Typical systems: intruder alarm, door entry, access control and CCTV at entrances.

Worth knowing: premises are often empty overnight and at weekends.

Clinics and medical centres

Controlled movement between public and clinical areas, with CCTV covering reception and corridors.

Typical systems: access control, video intercom, CCTV and intruder alarm.

Worth knowing: staff, visitors and service users are on site every day, so systems need to be simple to use.

Hospital sites and campuses

Layered security across wards, pharmacies, laboratories, plant rooms, car parks and perimeter zones.

Typical systems: integrated CCTV and access control, perimeter protection, ANPR and barriers.

Worth knowing: ambulance, staff and visitor vehicle access needs planning alongside the perimeter.

Multi-site healthcare organisations

Consistent protection across estates of varying size and complexity.

Typical systems: standardised access control and CCTV, with planned maintenance across every site.

Worth knowing: our engineers are local to the region, and we also work with national clients across the UK.

SSAIB certified security installers

Our access control, intruder alarm and CCTV installation, servicing and maintenance work is carried out under our SSAIB certification, and we are an accredited CHAS contractor. If your organisation has its own estates, security or compliance requirements, tell us at the survey stage so the design can take them into account from the start.

Frequently asked questions

Healthcare facilities typically require a combination of CCTV, access control, intruder alarms, perimeter protection and fire safety systems to protect patients, staff and equipment. The right mix depends on the size of the site, how it is used and what needs protecting, which is why quotations start with a free site visit.
